This is the 3rd jointer I’ve owned. I had an 8” Delta about 30 years ago that I ended up giving to a friend. Then, about 3 years ago, I purchased a Shop Fox 6” bench top model. I was never happy with the Shop Fox, spent a lot of time and energy trying to set it up correctly. Even had a couple of pieces of the machine break. It was just never right. Getting edges on two boards that were good enough to glue seemed to be more luck than anything else.
I just got my Powermatic 6” jointer and set it up in my garage, so I haven’t done any projects with it yet. However, it doesn’t take long to come to some conclusions with this machine.
There is nothing like the feel of using a quality machine. The first pass with a test board produced a square, straight, and exceptionally smooth edge. It almost felt too easy. It seemed like a better machine than even the 8” Delta, and I loved that machine.
Good machines are made with cast iron, lots of it. And this machine is just that, heavy with cast iron. Impeccable fit and finish. Even at a glance, my impression was that input table, output table, and fence are absolutely true. Truly built to last a life time.
Although I assembled it myself, it’s probably better to have a little help. Other than being heavy, it was simple and straight foreword to assemble. I had it up and running in under an hour, and it required no adjustments. It was perfect right out of the box.
Sure, it’s probably the most expensive 6” jointer on the market, but you’ll never be dissatisfied with the quality of work this machine will produce.
Everything I ever expected from Powermatic and more. Couldn't be happier.
