I glue up boards to make wider panels and the 9404 belt sander makes sanding the glue lines pretty easy. A high-quality 80 grit belt came with the sander and I can sand out the joints on both sides of the panel in about the same time as sanding just one side with my random orbit sander.
I think the light weight of the sander reduces sanding lines and I have had no problem with the platten. I ordered a PC 4x24 graphite sanding pad at the same time, but have not felt I needed it. In fact, the PC pad is a few inches too short so it isn't compatible anyway.
The belt tracking works well and I have enjoyed the variable speed for more delicate sanding jobs. Also nice is that this sander can be clamped or just held upside down for sanding the end grain of smaller objects.
