The decomposition occurring in the compost pile takes up all the available oxygen. Aeration is the replacement of oxygen to the center of the compost pile where it is lacking. Efficient decomposition can only occur if sufficient oxygen is present. Turning the compost pile is an effective means of adding oxygen and brings newly added material into contact with microbes. If the compost pile is not aerated, it may produce an odor symptomatic of anaerobic decomposition.

Operating Instructions

The purpose of turning is to increase oxygen flow for the microorganisms, and to blend un-decomposed materials into the center of the pile. If you are managing a hot pile, you'll probably want to turn your compost every 3 to 5 days, or when the interior temperature dips below about 110 degrees F.

Push the head of the tool into the center of the compost pile.
Pull back while twisting the handle. This will extend the wings and blend the material.
Repeat as necessary to blend the material.
Repeat the process as necessary to maintain the compost pile.

My first impression was firm, heavy (not unwieldy) and well built. The cross type padded handles make it easy to plunge the tool into the compost pile. The wings which fold in while plunging are supposed to open out while you pull the tool upwards. Most of the time they stick in. This only slightly diminishes the tools effectiveness. I might assume these wings will loosen after futher use. I still would highly recommend this item.
