I had 4120B smoke alarms hardwired in my house. One of them malfunctioned at 3 AM so I had to disconnect it and discovered the battery had exploded inside it. I later found out that Duracell batteries are prone to explosion in BRK smoke alarms, but that's another story.

On the back of the smoke alarm it actually said to replace it in 2006, so I can't say I wasn't warned.

I was wary about multiple comments concerning false alarms with the 9120B, but went ahead and ordered them.

The mounting bracket for the 9120B is slightly different than the one for the 4120B, but it was pretty simple to loosen two screws, rotate out the old bracket, slide in the new one, and tighten it in place. The electrical connector is the same on both models.

One observation: the plastic housings on the old alarms had yellowed significantly, which is something I always associated with UV exposure from direct sunlight. Alarms mounted on the ceiling never get direct sunlight, but I guess enough reflected light reaches them to do the damage. The new alarms are brilliant white in comparison.

There have been no false alarms in the past few weeks. I will certainly update this review if I start having them.

I had a difficult time finding smoke alarms that were the same brand as the ones my builder installed originally 9-10 years ago, but no other brand was compatible to the wiring. I was [...] with 7 to replace.I replaced all of my smoke alarms and couldn't be happier. It was a quick, easy installation for me - and they look great. It was as easy as could be, and no more beeping and false alarms from the older ones!

BRK 4120B came original to the house. Had only one (1) whole house false alarm. Also had issues with "chirping" every few months. [...] The 9120B are a super-easy upgrade from the 4120B. The 9210B locks into the retainer ring snugly unlike the 4120B's design. The 9210B also can use Duracell batteries. On installation only had one (1) alarm that was bad (in alarm mode and could not be turned off). All in all, I think a very good idea to ugprade.
