I had 4120B smoke alarms hardwired in my house. One of them malfunctioned at 3 AM so I had to disconnect it and discovered the battery had exploded inside it. I later found out that Duracell batteries are prone to explosion in BRK smoke alarms, but that's another story.
On the back of the smoke alarm it actually said to replace it in 2006, so I can't say I wasn't warned.
I was wary about multiple comments concerning false alarms with the 9120B, but went ahead and ordered them.
The mounting bracket for the 9120B is slightly different than the one for the 4120B, but it was pretty simple to loosen two screws, rotate out the old bracket, slide in the new one, and tighten it in place. The electrical connector is the same on both models.
One observation: the plastic housings on the old alarms had yellowed significantly, which is something I always associated with UV exposure from direct sunlight. Alarms mounted on the ceiling never get direct sunlight, but I guess enough reflected light reaches them to do the damage. The new alarms are brilliant white in comparison.
There have been no false alarms in the past few weeks. I will certainly update this review if I start having them.
[...]Interfaced well with other BRK smoke alarms already in the house. Great price.
I use to have the older model of these alarms and I had to replace the old connecter with the new one. Other than that, it is working as a charm.
FIRST ALERT HAS A LONG WELL DOCUMENTED HISTORY OF FALSE ALARMS. WE OUTFITTED OUR HOME WITH 12 OF THEM AND THREE ARE CONSISTENTLY MALFUNCTIONING. READ OTHER WEBSITES TO DISCOVER CONTACTING THEM IS LIKE CONTACTING THE OLD SOVIET UNION! This product is unsafe and will encourage the homeowner to disconnect due to many frequent false alarms all hours of the night! [...]DO NOT BUY, UNDEPENDABLE, FALSE ALARMS
I changed out old style detectors for this model. No problem installing, took about 3 minutes a unit.
I had a difficult time finding smoke alarms that were the same brand as the ones my builder installed originally 9-10 years ago, but no other brand was compatible to the wiring. I was [...] with 7 to replace.I replaced all of my smoke alarms and couldn't be happier. It was a quick, easy installation for me - and they look great. It was as easy as could be, and no more beeping and false alarms from the older ones!
BRK 4120B came original to the house. Had only one (1) whole house false alarm. Also had issues with "chirping" every few months. [...] The 9120B are a super-easy upgrade from the 4120B. The 9210B locks into the retainer ring snugly unlike the 4120B's design. The 9210B also can use Duracell batteries. On installation only had one (1) alarm that was bad (in alarm mode and could not be turned off). All in all, I think a very good idea to ugprade.
they were delivered fast! I had to order an additional to meet a new fire code, that one came right away too. Didn't hold up the electrician.
Great alarm for the price. Easy to install. Innovative design and features.
A great product that is easy and quick to install. It is small and blends well with it's surroundings.
[...] Everything worked perfectly from the ordering clear through to the instulation. Thanks again :)
Great product, many improvements over earlier products, easy to install. I had to change the mounting brackets, but the connector was the same as my previous BRK product, so I replaced my old detectors in about two minutes each.
The smoke alarm meets local building code requirements. Sensor device has long-term warranty.
Missing from product was mounting screws and electrical twist-connects which required separate purchase and delayed installation.
This product worked great in our kitchen. The last one we had would go off when the oven is set at 400 degrees. We could never cook anything in our house without the smoke alram going off.
The reason it was an easy installation for me because I changed out a style that did not have a battery backup to a battery backup model.
easily installed using existing wiring
I was pleased to find similar replactments to the 10 year old ones and they fit right into the lines.
