1130 Series Swing-Open Window Security Guards

1130 Series...Solid Steel Bars...Child Safe 3 1/2" Bar Spacing...Mounts inside...Easy to Install

Features

  • Swings in for easy cleaning or quick exit
  • Child Safe 3 1/2" Bar Spacing
  • Locking Channel included
  • Locking Options:
    • Bolt & Nut (not included) - Use round head bolt for greater security. Nut is not visible from outside.
    • Padlock (not included) - Hang key nearby for safety.
    • Fixed Mount - Non-opening, secure with 3" screws in package.
    • Fire Safety Release Pin (included) - Located out of reach of small children. Requires moderate force to release. Removing pin allows bars to be lifted. After removing pin an adult can easily lift bars free of diagonal slots in lock channel and swing free.
    • Remote Safety Release Lock (Model # 1171 Sold Separately) - Release Lever attached to 5 foot cable mounts out of reach of children or outsiders. Fits both model number series 1130 and 1170.
    • Typical Applications:
      • Mount vertically
      • Mount Horizontally
      • For double hung windows - Bars can be mounted over both upper and lower sash, or over lower sash only, as desired.
      • For Basement Windows - Often the most vulnerable windows. Mount inside for security and easy of installation

    Installation Tips

    • IMPORTANT: Screws must penetrate into wall studs for maximum security.
    • For swing-open mounting:
      • First, mount locking channel on right hand side of window: Drill 5/32" or 11/64" hole 3" deep for top screw only. Hang channel loosely on top screw, drill remaining holes and mount.
      • Next, hang right side of bars in locking channel. Hold hinge channel against left side of window, make sure guard is level, mark and drill top hole. Insert screw, drill remaining holes and drive screws.
    • For fixed mounting, non-opening:
      • Hold bars in position, mark top hole in hinge channel and drill 5/32" or 11/64" hole 3" deep. Insert screw, level bars and drill one hole through top of fixed channel. Drill remaining holes and drive screws.
    • Note: 3" screws in this package are "unhardened" to allow drilling out cross-slots in Phillips heads after installation to make tamper-resistant. Extra care must be taken in driving these screws to prevent driver from spinning and mutilating screw. Make sure driver tip is in good condition and press firmly while driving. Lubricate screws with soap for easier driving. To remove guard later drill deeper into screws, removing heads. After removing guard, clamp screw shanks in reversible drill and back out.
    • Screws must project into wall studs for maximum security. In most cases, surface mounted Burglar Bars are easier to install because the screws are easier to drive. Surface mounting also makes screws more difficult to work on from outside the house by a potential intruder who might break the window and attempt to remove the screws.
    • Optional: After installation drill out Phillips cross slots in each screw to make tamper resistant. To remove bars later, drill deeper into screws, removing heads. After removing bars, clamp screw shanks in reversible drill and back out.
    • For easier mounting on concrete or concrete block walls, 2" X 4" lumber can be bonded to wall alongside windows with high grade construction adhesive. Bars then can easily mount on 2" X 4"s.

    Warnings and Cautions

    • Use of this product on a fire escape window in New York City is illegal, could be a serious safety hazard and could result in a fine by the Department of Buildings. Some communities require a quick means of easy escape from window guards in some applications. Check your local codes.
    • For maximum safety, anyone who might need to open this guard in case of emergency should be familiar with opening procedure through personal practice.
    • All parts should be checked from time to time to see that all is in good working order.
    • Sterling Window Security Guards when properly installed will tend to discourage illegal intruders. But no protection is absolute. With enough time and tools a determined criminal can defeat any barrier.
    • SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS:
      • Window guards should not be installed on windows providing access to fire escapes because use of guards on these windows may cause fire entrapment.
      • In an emergency any window may become a potential avenue of escape or rescue. For maximum safety we recommend use of the Fire Safety Release Pin (included in package) or a Remote Safety Release Lock (sold separately).
      • Refer to size label of front of package for maximum recommended window size.
    • Do not install this guard in a window that is larger that the manufacturer's recommended size. To do so may result in the guard's being ineffective in preventing falls from the window.
    • Guard must be securely fastened into window framing members and wall studs in good condition. Window guard may fall out or will not function properly if installed incorrectly or if applied to the wrong type of window.
